How to add VAT

To add VAT, multiply the price before VAT by the rate. At the standard UK rate of 20%, multiply by 1.20. So £100 before VAT becomes £120, made up of £100 net plus £20 of VAT.

How to remove VAT from a total

To go the other way, from a VAT-inclusive total back to the price before VAT, divide by 1.20. £120 gross ÷ 1.20 = £100 net, which means £20 of VAT. A handy shortcut: for 20% VAT, the VAT portion of any gross figure is simply the total divided by 6.

UK VAT rates

  • Standard - 20%. Most goods and services.
  • Reduced - 5%. Domestic energy, children's car seats, some home energy-saving work.
  • Zero - 0%. Most food, books, newspapers and children's clothing. Still VAT-taxable, just charged at 0%.

When do you have to register?

You must register for VAT once your VAT-taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, or if you expect to pass it in the next 30 days. Below that you can still register voluntarily, which lets you reclaim the VAT you pay on purchases. Once registered you charge VAT on your invoices and pay it over to HMRC, minus the VAT you have reclaimed.

Rates and thresholds are correct at the time of writing. Check GOV.UK for the current figures before filing.
